Pupil Premium
In 2011/12 the Government launched the Pupil Premium funding allocation to schools. This money is given to schools based on the numbers of pupils in the school who are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). From 2012/13 it was expanded to include all children who have been eligible for FSM within the last 6 years.
The funding also covers children in care aged 4-15 who have been looked after continuously for more than 6 months. A service premium has also been introduced for children whose parents are serving in the armed forces.
Currently schools in England also attract the Pupil Premium for children adopted from care or who left care under a Special Guardianship Order.
Schools have been able to claim extra funding through the Early Years Pupil Premium to support children's development, learning and care.
