Mathematics

Here at Kells Infant school we use NCETM/ Oak Academy and Mastering Number as our Math's programs.

This is a scheme that we believe will benefit all our children to flourish and become life long mathematicians.

Mastering Number

Mastering Number aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.

Benefits

  • Your pupils will be able to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas
  • You will develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations
  • You will work to develop teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in calculation and number sense for all children
  • You will develop understanding and use of appropriate manipulatives to support your teaching of mathematical structures

We use Mastering Number as our Whole class mathematics teaching within in Reception.

We use White Rose Maths Nursery planning, for our nursery children. We adapt this as we need to depending on the cohort of children.

NCETM/Oak Academy

Behind all NCETM and Maths Hubs work in the field of teaching for mastery are Five Big Ideas, all informed by research evidence and classroom experience. NCETM's aim is for all those learning maths to enjoy the subject, and to appreciate its power and value in the wider world. To achieve this, they want everyone teaching maths to feel confident in their teaching, and to share a passion for the subject with their pupils.

We believe this way of teaching Maths will be beneficial for our children as it allows our children to think deeply about their mathematical learning and gives them a solid foundation within mathematics. Where they can build upon throughout there time here at Kells Infant School.

Assessment

Nursery

We use summative assessment and teacher judgement, that is all assessed against the ELG's for mathematics alongside the development matters document.

Reception

We use summative assessment and teacher judgement, that is all assessed against the ELG's for mathematics alongside the development matters document. We also complete the Government baseline assessment and complete the EYFS Profile at the end of the school year.

Year 1/ Year 2

We use the Ready To Progress Criteria (RTP) to assess each child. this allows to support the children to keep up and not be in a situation where the children are trying to catch up.
